Logos Official Rules:
To begin, each player chooses a letter tile from the bag provided. The player whose letter is closest to A begins the game by tossing the dice.
Dice Categories
LOGOS:
Player randomly selects eight letter tiles from the bag provided. Player may then discard up to two tiles (discarded tiles are to be placed in a separate pile with letters facing upwards). Player may exchange up to 2 tiles either from the bag or the discard pile (once there are enough in the discard pile). Exchanged tiles do NOT go into the draw bag and must go into the discard pile. This will result in the player having eight letter tiles total.
Objective is to use as many letter tiles as possible to form a crossword with words connecting and reading from left to right and/or top to bottom. Keep score by writing down each word created to avoid confusion. Total point value of all the words is added to player’s score. Unused letters must be added to the discard pile. If player is challenged based on incorrect spelling of any word, all letters played during that turn must be removed from the crossword and player is to keep those letters until next turn when he/she may trade in up to two of the letter tiles. Adding an "s", "ed", or "ing" to any word gains only the point value of the additional letters added. However, if adding an "s" to hop changes it to shop then the nature of the word changes and the player obtains the full point value.
SYNONYM/ANTONYM:
Indicates a single point value. Opponent reads aloud the word shown on the word card by pulling out of the sleeve. Player must choose to provide a synonym OR antonym. The best value is to choose a word with the highest point value. Player is permitted to see the word provided since the intent is NOT to spell the word but to provide another word. Player writes down the chosen word so opponents can view. Challenging rules apply as above. Adding the prefix un is not allowed. For instance, unfriendly is not acceptable as an antonym for friendly.
SPELL/DEFINE:
Indicates a possible double point bonus. Opponent reads aloud the word at the top of the card by pulling out of the sleeve. Player is first told if the word is a noun, verb or adjective. Player will write down the spelling and add the point value. If not challenged the player has the option to define the word and receive double the point value. Note: a noun cannot be defined as a verb and can be grounds for challenging rules. Player can provide ANY definition where more than one is available. However, if the player is challenged for the definition, he/she will lose the point value of the spelling also. If incorrectly challenged, opponent loses the next turn.
IMPORTANT: any one definition can be given (many words have more than one definition). For example, the word bulk as a noun can mean a ship’s cargo and would be an acceptable definition.
ANY:
Indicates player can choose any category.
Play game until four letters or less remain in the draw pile and discard pile combined. The last player may discard two tiles; however, tiles that cannot be used must be subtracted from score. Whatever remains in the discard pile is NOT subtracted from final point scores.
Challenge Rule:
If a player is challenged, the challenger opens the dictionary or thesaurus to check the validity of the challenge. If the challenger is correct the player gains no point value and must remove any letter tiles used in the crossword. The player effectively loses that turn. However if the challenger is wrong, the challenger loses their next turn.
Suggestions and House Rules: (House rules versus official written rules)
Suggestion for first time players: Consider studying the cover card of each category to get acquainted with the idea of possibilities for word definitions and synonyms/antonyms by using the dictionary and thesaurus.
Written rules for the game are for the benefit of all players to follow for the players to avoid confusion. However, in your house you may wish to implement some modifications such as:
-
Ending the game (if you prefer you can state a rule that the game does not end until all the letter tiles are used)
-
No two letter words allowed, or if they are formed as a byproduct of creating other words they are not counted for point value.
-
players can use agreed upon dictionaries, lexicons, thesaurus, word lists etc. Additionally a timer may be introduced for expediency. A talking dictionary may be helpful in proper pronunciation of words.
-
Players should all agree to house rules before starting the game to avoid confusion.
